About Airports

A field guide to the places behind airport codes. Follow a name, a photograph or a point on the map, without an account.

An independent PLAYCITY guide, not an official airport or aviation authority service. Not for navigation or flight planning.

Choose your own route

Search by code, place or country, then narrow the map by continent. Each * replaces one character: *A* finds LAX and CAN; K*** searches four-letter identifiers. Save discoveries in this browser or export your results as CSV.

Reading the codes

IATA — IATA uses three-letter location identifiers for commercial air travel, including reservations and baggage. Some identify cities or intermodal locations, not individual airports.

ICAO — ICAO publishes four-letter location indicators in Doc 7910 for aerodromes and other locations. They serve flight operations and appear in aviation weather reports. SEA / KSEA is a US example, not a conversion rule for the world.

A code is an identifier, not necessarily an acronym. Available combinations, earlier names and assignment history matter. We explain individual origins only when a source supports them; we do not assign a meaning to every letter.

The collection covers airports and seaplane bases with IATA codes in the OurAirports dataset, not every kind of IATA location. Names also draw on Wikidata. Photo authors and licenses appear in each airport detail. Coverage does not imply current passenger service.
